Astucia - Delineation in Australia

Location
Australia, Victoria, Whittlesea

Application
Delineation

Products
Astucia SolarLite road studs

The Problem
The Arthurs Creek Road in the City of Whittlesea is a two lane, two way road approx 40km from central Melbourne. The road is unlit, hilly and there are a number of curves making sight distance poor. The road is next to the Yan Yean Reservoir and is prone to heavy fogs, mists and wet conditions particularly during the winter months. And although the accident history is not unusual for a road of this type, the Council identified this site as requiring attention and additional delineation.

The Solution
The solution was to install Astucia’s bi-directional white SolarLite flush studs along the road centerline to address the most problematic location which was on the  uphill and downhill section of the steep hill to guide motorists, and where their car headlights were of little assistance. The flush studs now guide motorists safely up and down the hill and around the bends during times of thick fog and in wet conditions.

Fifty-four bi-directional white flush studs were used spaced at 24 metre intervals with two studs placed side by side at each point to reinforce the painted barrier lines (ie. no overtaking double line) in this location.

Benefits

  • Dramatically increased the road safety
  • Increased visibility of up to 900 metres
  • Increased lane discipline
  • Better delineation of curves and dips

Testimonial
City of Whittlesea’s Manager Development Engineering, Griff Davis says, “With almost no street lighting and many curves, Arthurs Creek Road requires extra concentration from drivers especially in wet or foggy conditions.

“Like many other rural roads there can also be hazards created by wildlife or other animals too. The solar powered road studs provide a simple but innovative treatment that will enhance safety and after an evaluation period may be considered for other local rural roads in the future.”

Mr Davis said that since the installation a number of motorists have contacted council to enquire about the solar lighting and provide positive feedback on its benefit from the point of view of improving the driving conditions.
